A monitor that misbehaves is almost always cable or driver. The display panel itself fails rarely.
Flickering
Most common cause: a marginal cable. HDMI and DisplayPort cables have a certified maximum length — long runs or cheap cables fail at higher refresh rates.
- Swap the cable with a known-good one
- Reduce the refresh rate in Display settings → Advanced display → drop from 144Hz to 60Hz. If the flicker stops, the cable can't support the higher rate.
- Check seating — both ends, push firmly
- Tear-shaped flicker pattern that scrolls — almost certainly a driver issue; reinstall the GPU driver
Blank screen but PC is on
If the laptop / desktop boots (you hear fans, disk activity) but the monitor stays black:
- Press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B — restarts the graphics driver. Screen flashes; if it returns, problem solved.
- Cycle the monitor's input source — your machine might be connected to HDMI 2 while the monitor is set to HDMI 1
- Power-cycle the monitor — unplug, wait 30 seconds, plug back in
- Try the monitor on another machine — if it stays blank, the monitor is the problem; if it works, it's your machine's GPU output
Wrong colors / color cast
Greens looking magenta, everything washed out, or a pink tint over half the screen:
- Loose cable pin is the #1 cause — reseat or swap the cable
- Wrong color profile — Settings → Display → Color management; reset to default sRGB
- Night Light is on — Settings → Display → Night Light; toggle off
Vertical or horizontal lines
A single bright vertical or horizontal line that's always there:
- Power-cycle the monitor
- Reseat the cable
- If it persists, that's a panel hardware fault — ticket
Screen tearing (broken horizontal seam during video)
Enable G-Sync or FreeSync if your monitor and GPU support them. Otherwise, set the refresh rate to the highest your monitor supports and enable V-Sync in the GPU control panel.
Screen brightness too low
For external monitors, brightness is controlled via the monitor's physical buttons, not Windows. The OSD menu is on the monitor — usually a button on the bottom or side.
Dead pixels
A single permanently bright or black pixel is a manufacturing defect. Most vendor warranties only replace if there are several dead pixels — check the warranty terms; usually 3-5 stuck pixels minimum.
When to ticket
Raise a ticket with:
- Monitor make and model (label on the back)
- Cable type
- A photo of the problem (with a different working monitor in the frame for comparison if possible)
