ThinkPads (and most modern Lenovo laptops) include a hardware test suite that can be run from Windows via Lenovo Vantage or from UEFI before boot.

Lenovo Vantage (Windows)

The fastest path. If Vantage isn't installed:

  • Open Microsoft Store → search Lenovo Vantage → install
  • Or download from Lenovo Support

In Vantage:

  1. Click DeviceHardware Scan
  2. Choose Quick Scan (4 min) or Full Scan (15 min)
  3. Hit Start

Results show pass/fail per component. Failed components produce a result code — copy it for your ticket.

Pre-boot diagnostics (F10)

If Windows won't boot or Vantage won't open:

  1. Power off the laptop
  2. Press power, then tap F10 repeatedly until the diagnostic screen appears
  3. Choose Run All Tests or pick specific components

Some newer ThinkPads use F12 for a boot menu, then offer Diagnostics from there. Tap both if one doesn't work.

Reading test results

A failed test shows a result code like WHD01-AGE9HG. The first part identifies the test; the suffix is a one-time hash that Lenovo support can look up.

Common failure types:

  • WMD prefix — Memory tests (RAM fault)
  • WHD prefix — Hard disk tests (storage fault)
  • WBT prefix — Battery tests (cell degradation)
  • WPC prefix — PC environment (system board, thermal)

The result code is unique per failure instance — give the full code to support, not a guess.

Battery check specifically

ThinkPads have one of the best battery monitoring stories in the industry. Vantage shows:

  • Cycle count — under 300 is healthy, over 600 is wearing out
  • Health percentage — under 70% means time to replace
  • Current charge level vs. design capacity

Vantage also exposes Conservation Mode — limits charge to 60-80% to extend cell life if the laptop is mostly plugged in. Useful for desktop replacements.

Resetting BIOS to defaults

If you've been changing BIOS settings and something stopped working:

  1. Restart, press F1 (or Enter then F1) for BIOS Setup
  2. F9 → Load Setup Defaults
  3. F10 → Save and Exit

This often fixes "won't boot after a BIOS change" tickets.

Common patterns

  • Random freezes at high load + memory test fail → RAM replacement
  • Slow file operations + storage test fail → SSD replacement
  • Loud fan, throttling but all tests pass → thermal paste needs renewing (vendor service)
  • Won't boot, but enters BIOS fine → almost always a corrupt Windows install, not hardware

When to ticket

Raise a ticket with:

  • The machine type and serial number (Vantage shows them, or look on the bottom sticker)
  • The full result code from any failed test
  • Whether the problem is consistent or intermittent
  • Cycle count if it's a battery question

ThinkPad warranty is typically excellent — codes from these diagnostics map directly to part replacements without further negotiation.
