Macs that won't boot normally have three reliable backstops: Safe Mode, Recovery, and Single User mode (Intel only). Knowing which to use saves an unnecessary trip to the Apple Store.

First — distinguish Apple Silicon from Intel

The keypresses differ. To check: Apple menu → About This Mac. If it says "Apple M1", "M2", or "M3", you have Apple Silicon. Otherwise, Intel.

Safe Mode

Boots with minimum drivers and clears some system caches. Fixes:

 • Slow boots
 • Random kernel panics
 • Apps crashing at login

Apple Silicon

 1. Shut down
 2. Press and hold power button until "Loading startup options" appears
 3. Select your startup disk
 4. Hold Shift, click Continue in Safe Mode
 5. Log in (might be asked twice)

Intel

 1. Shut down
 2. Press power, then immediately hold Shift
 3. Release when the Apple logo appears

You'll see "Safe Boot" in the menu bar. Restart normally to exit.

Recovery Mode

Reinstall macOS, run Disk Utility, restore from Time Machine.

Apple Silicon

 1. Shut down
 2. Press and hold power button until "Loading startup options" appears
 3. Click OptionsContinue

Intel

 1. Shut down
 2. Press power, then immediately hold Cmd + R
 3. Release at the Apple logo

In Recovery you can:

 • Reinstall macOS (preserves your data — uses Recovery image)
 • Disk Utility — first aid your boot drive (use this before reinstalling)
 • Time Machine restore — if you have a backup
 • Safari — for downloading help docs while offline

When Macs go fully unresponsive

If pressing the power button does nothing:

 1. Apple Silicon: hold power for 10 seconds, release, then press once
 2. Intel laptop: Shift + Control + Option + Power for 10 seconds (SMC reset)
 3. Intel desktop: unplug for 15 seconds, plug back, then press power

If still nothing, the issue is hardware — battery / power supply / logic board.

Disk Utility "First Aid"

Even if your Mac boots, occasional file system errors can corrupt it. In Recovery:

 1. Open Disk Utility
 2. Select your boot disk (top-level entry, usually "Macintosh HD")
 3. Click First Aid → Run

First Aid finds and repairs most disk errors silently. Run it once a month if you've been seeing weird app crashes.

Common patterns

| Symptom | First try |
|---|---|
| Blank screen, no chime | Disconnect all USB devices, retry power |
| Question mark folder at boot | Recovery → Disk Utility → First Aid; if no help, reinstall macOS |
| Login screen but cursor frozen | Safe Mode |
| Random kernel panic, restarts itself | Safe Mode + remove recently installed apps |
| Boots, but very slow | Activity Monitor → check for a runaway process |

When to ticket

Open a ticket if:

 • Safe Mode doesn't boot either
 • Disk Utility First Aid reports errors that won't repair
 • Battery icon shows "Service" (means cells need replacement)
 • Any of the recovery paths fail to even load

Include the macOS version (About This Mac), the serial number (also there), and what step the boot fails at.
