A laptop that won't power on is almost always one of four things, in order of likelihood: dead battery, bad charger, stuck in a hung sleep state, or a real hardware fault. Work through these in order before raising a ticket.
1. Confirm the charger is delivering power
Look at the charging indicator LED — usually on the side of the laptop near the charger port, or on the charger brick. If it's off entirely:
- Try a different outlet (some power strips quietly fail)
- Wiggle the cable connections at both the wall and the laptop
- Try a colleague's charger if it's the same model
If the LED lights up but the laptop still won't boot, the charger is fine and the problem is the laptop.
2. Hard reset (the most underrated step)
Modern laptops have firmware that can hang in a sleep state. To force a hard reset:
- Unplug the charger
- Hold the power button down for 30 seconds (not 5, the full 30)
- Plug the charger back in
- Press power once normally
This drains residual charge in capacitors and forces a cold boot. It fixes roughly a third of "dead laptop" reports.
3. Listen and look for any sign of life
- No lights, no fan, no sound — likely a dead battery + faulty charger combination
- One quick beep then silence — usually OK, just a slow display
- Fan spins but screen stays black — display issue, try an external monitor
- Repeated beeps — RAM or motherboard fault, it's a hardware ticket
4. Try external display
If the laptop appears to power on (fan spins, you hear the disk activity) but the screen stays black, plug in an external monitor (HDMI). If the external works, the laptop's display panel or its cable is the problem.
5. When to raise a ticket
Open a ticket if:
- None of the above produces any sign of life
- It boots intermittently — fine yesterday, dead today, fine an hour later
- You hear a click or smell anything burnt
Include the asset tag, the model number from the bottom sticker, and a one-line description of what you tried.
