Teams meeting problems split between hardware, bandwidth, and the Teams client itself. Symptoms tell you which.
"I'm choppy / breaking up"
This is upload bandwidth almost always. Open another tab and run speedtest.net — look at Upload.
Teams needs:
- Audio only: 30 Kbps up
- Video call: 1.5 Mbps up minimum, 4 Mbps for HD
If upload is below 2 Mbps, your bandwidth isn't enough. Causes:
- OneDrive uploading a big file
- Phone tethering (low ceiling)
- Far from the Wi-Fi AP
"Others are choppy / robotic"
That's their upload, not yours. Suggest they check theirs. Or both of you have a degraded link in the middle (your ISP or theirs).
"Echo on the call"
Someone in the meeting has their speakers turned up and their mic open — your voice goes out their speakers, back into their mic, and to you delayed.
If it's you echoing:
- Use a headset
- Or lower your speaker volume
- Don't sit too close to the laptop mic
"Can't hear anyone"
- Check the speaker icon at the bottom of the Teams meeting — is it muted on Teams' end?
- Check the system volume in the system tray
- Check the output device — Teams Settings → Devices → Speaker — is it set to the right output?
- Plug headphones in; if you hear there, your laptop speakers are muted or broken
"They can't hear me"
- Check Teams mute (microphone icon at the bottom)
- Check Teams Settings → Devices → Microphone — is the right input selected?
- Click Make a test call — Teams plays your voice back; if you don't hear yourself, the mic isn't capturing
- Test in another app (Voice Recorder on Windows) — if that works, Teams permissions are the issue
"Video is frozen for them"
Similar to choppy audio — upload bandwidth issue. Turn off video temporarily and check audio improves.
"Teams crashes during meetings"
Almost always one of:
- Out-of-date Teams client — Teams updates itself, but a stuck one needs help: close fully (right-click system tray → Quit), then relaunch
- Driver issue with webcam or microphone — close other apps using the camera
- Low RAM — close other heavy apps (Chrome with 20 tabs is the usual suspect)
"Background blur / virtual background not working"
Newer Teams clients require:
- A laptop with a supported CPU (most modern ones; very old laptops fail)
- The right Teams client version — sign out and back in to force an update
Reset Teams cache
If Teams is misbehaving in weird ways, reset its cache:
Windows:
1. Close Teams completely
2. Windows + R → %appdata%\Microsoft\Teams
3. Delete everything in that folder
4. Reopen Teams — it'll re-sync
You'll have to sign in again. Your chats and channels are server-side, nothing is lost.
When to ticket
Open a ticket if:
- Multiple people on the same network have issues simultaneously
- Calls fail to connect entirely (no audio either way)
- A specific scheduled meeting consistently fails while ad-hoc calls work
