Many surveillance setups can integrate with door access control — when someone badges in, the NVR jumps to that camera's footage. Setup varies by vendor.

1. Identify your access control system

Common ones:

  • HID iCLASS, HID Origo
  • Honeywell ProWatch
  • Genetec Security Center
  • Axis A1001
  • Lenel (now Carrier Access)
  • Bosch BIS or AMS

The vendor's integration options determine what's possible with your NVR.

2. What "integration" means

Two levels:

  • Event-linked viewing — badge event creates a bookmark in the NVR for that timestamp. Click the event, jump to footage.
  • Real-time alerting — when someone badges in, NVR shows live view of that door automatically.

The latter is more useful for security staff watching live.

3. Compatible NVR brands

Best integration:

  • Genetec — natively integrates many access systems
  • Hanwha — extensive open platform support
  • Hikvision — works with HID and others via SDK
  • Axis — open architecture, integrates with many

For VMS (Video Management Software) approach (separate VMS from NVR hardware), Milestone XProtect is the standard.

4. ONVIF profile A

ONVIF is the camera/NVR interoperability standard. Profile A is for access control. If both your access system and NVR support ONVIF Profile A, integration is straightforward.

5. Event bridging via API

For custom needs:

  • Access system pushes events via webhook or API to the VMS
  • VMS records the event timestamp and links to camera footage
  • Click event → jump to footage

Requires technical setup. Often a one-time integration project.

6. Card / badge data

Beyond timestamps, you may want to know who badged in:

  • The access system has the cardholder name
  • This data can flow into the VMS event log

This makes searches like "show me all entries by Priya last week" possible — provided the data flow is set up.

7. False access events

If a badge swipe doesn't match a person seen in footage:

  • Tailgating: someone followed in behind a legitimate user
  • Anti-passback can detect a badge used twice in a row without an exit swipe
  • Some access systems have follow-through video review as a feature

8. Audit trail

For compliance:

  • Every entry event with associated camera footage
  • Retention period for both should match (or longer for video, shorter for badge events depending on policy)
  • Logs of who reviewed what footage and when

9. Practical setup checklist

  • All clocks synced (NVR, access controllers, network)
  • Same time zone configured
  • Camera assigned to each door
  • Event types defined (entry, exit, denied access, forced)

10. Testing

After integration:

  • Stage a few badge swipes
  • Confirm events appear in the VMS event log
  • Confirm clicking the event jumps to the correct camera and time
  • Test denied / unauthorized access — should also appear

When to ticket

Raise a ticket if:

  • You're planning integration and need a scope quote
  • Existing integration stopped working (clock drift, license change)
  • You need a custom dashboard showing entries by user

Include the access control vendor, NVR/VMS vendor, and what level of integration you want.
